Multiple customers at a Chili’s restaurant reported suffering chemical burns after consuming margaritas mixed with an industrial cleaning chemical. The incident occurred in Forest City, North Carolina, as reported by the Foothills Health District.
According to authorities, three customers drank the contaminated beverages. Additionally, two employees were exposed and showed symptoms after tasting the chemical substance.
“The mistake happened when an employee mistakenly used an industrial degreaser, thinking it was sugar or salt,” said the Foothills Health District.
The mix-up began when the degreaser was delivered by a contracted worker and placed in an unmarked container. This container was later found in the bar area, leading an employee to use it for preparing the margaritas.
Once the restaurant opened, customers consuming these margaritas experienced immediate discomfort and chemical burns around their mouths. After customers reported their symptoms, two employees tasted the substance and encountered similar issues.
In response, Chili’s stated that they promptly acted to assist those affected. The company emphasized that the health and safety of their guests and team members remain their primary concern.
Following an investigation by the Foothills Health District, the restaurant’s food service permit was briefly suspended. After confirming all other safety standards were met, the permit was reinstated.
The health district reminded all food service establishments in North Carolina about the necessity of proper chemical labeling and storage to prevent contamination. Jason Masters, Foothills Health District’s health director, highlighted this as a critical lesson in the importance of adhering to the North Carolina Food Code.
