When leading a nation into war, it is wise to consider the long-term consequences. President Trump’s approach, termed impulsive by commentator Peter Baker, often defies this strategy. Trump’s instincts led him to anticipate a swift conclusion to the conflict with Iran, a notion that has not aligned with reality.
Initially, Trump projected that the war, which began on February 28, would conclude within weeks. On March 1, he suggested it would last “four to five weeks.” By March 5, Trump claimed U.S. military efforts, aided by Israeli partners, were demolishing the enemy ahead of schedule. On March 7, he told reporters they were winning significantly. By March 20, he declared victory over Iran’s Navy and Air Force.
Despite these optimistic declarations, by August, the war persisted. Negotiations stalled, and American support dwindled. A recent Associated Press poll revealed that 64% of Americans see the war as unjustifiable. Political affiliations did not shield the president from criticism, with 87% of Democrats and 37% of Republicans opposing the war.
The polls reflect the growing discontent. CNN indicated Trump’s approval at 34%, matching his lowest after the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. An AP-NORC poll showed 33% approval, tying his lowest since 2017. A Quinnipiac poll pegged it at 32%. Despite this, Trump claimed on Truth Social that his true poll numbers were at an all-time high.
Republicans, aware of public sentiment, are concerned about upcoming elections. Kristen Soltis Anderson, a Republican pollster, noted that the Democrats lack a cohesive message beyond critiquing Trump. Despite this, if negative conditions persist, it might suffice for the Democrats’ advantage.
Five months into the protracted conflict, Trump faces critical choices. He can intensify measures against Iran to secure favorable negotiations, ensuring the Strait of Hormuz is accessible and preventing Iran’s nuclear weapon capabilities. Alternatively, he can withdraw, declaring victory if needed, but public skepticism will likely persist.
The midterm elections approach, and Trump’s next moves will be scrutinized closely. Choices include forcing Iran into compliance or withdrawing, either of which could have substantial implications at home and abroad.
