As outlined in a report released Monday, there is a need for the Justice Department to establish clearer training guidelines. These guidelines pertain to officers involved in task forces directed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Current practices allow nonfederal officers to assume task force responsibilities without completing mandatory training. This gap in preparation raises concerns about the efficacy and safety of operations conducted by these hybrid teams.
The report emphasizes the importance of comprehensive training to ensure local officers are well-equipped when working alongside federal agencies. The GAO urges that clear and enforceable rules be put in place to mandate the completion of specific training modules before any officer takes part in these collaborative efforts.
