Baker Mayfield’s outlook for free agency shifted dramatically once the NFL seasonal training camp commenced. Originally set to depart, Mayfield now remains with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under a lucrative new deal.
In surprising financial maneuvers common in the NFL, Mayfield has secured a three-year contract extension worth $165 million. OutKick confirms this deal, which aligns Mayfield’s annual average earnings at $55 million with notable quarterbacks such as Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, and Matthew Stafford, positioning him among the league’s upper echelon of paid players.
The Buccaneers evidently value Mayfield highly and demonstrated their commitment by advancing their negotiation stance. Over the past week, they have reached the terms Mayfield sought, ensuring his continued presence as a key player. Mayfield has achieved 95 touchdown passes in 51 starts for Tampa Bay, reinforcing his importance.
“Whether or not Mayfield belongs in the high salary classification alongside Burrow, Allen, or last year’s MVP is moot. The Buccaneers think so.”
Initially, tensions arose between the Buccaneers and their quarterback when training camp opened in July. The team’s initial extension offer fell short of Mayfield’s expectations, leading him to set a firm camp deadline for negotiations. Discussions about potentially entering free agency and betting on his own skill followed.
Analysts speculated that Mayfield’s performance might elevate under pressure. Yet, this contention dissipated swiftly. Mayfield’s frustrations subsided as negotiation deadlines were overlooked, sparking fresh rounds of talks.
Ultimately, the Buccaneers offered a contract aligning with Mayfield’s preferences, solidifying his place within a region he favors. The proposed salary proved more appealing than maintaining his initial stance on pinpointed deadlines and speculative free agency.
