Artificial Intelligence Takes Center Stage in Film ‘Dreams of Violets’

The docudrama ‘Dreams of Violets’ premiered at the Tribeca Festival, marking a growing acceptance of generative artificial intelligence in Hollywood. Each image in the film was crafted by AI, and the production cost was approximately $2,000.

Ash Koosha, who co-produced the film, found inspiration from his experiences when the internet was shut down in Tehran during a government crackdown on protesters. Though some footage of the events surfaced, Koosha, originally from Iran, realized the full scope of the situation might never be revealed.

Alongside his brother, Pooya Koosha, Ash created ‘Dreams of Violets,’ a 75-minute documentary-style film. It depicts scenes of officers discharging weapons, fires erupting in the streets, and a child witnessing the chaos. The production took place entirely in a London apartment without actors, sets, or cameras.

Koosha emphasized the urgency of storytelling in such circumstances, explaining that speed is essential as journalists, humanitarian workers, and artists rush to convey the unfolding events. His film serves as a memorial to a period when traditional journalism was obstructed.

The script, authored by Koosha himself, relied solely on AI to generate imagery, demonstrating a novel approach to filmmaking and storytelling.
