An American tourist died after lightning struck him while he was climbing Mount Etna, an erupting volcano in Italy.
The 30-year-old man had entered a restricted area of the volcano on Sunday, hoping to reach the summit. His actions coincided with a thunderstorm, leading to the tragic incident, as reported by the local newspaper La Sicilia.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before 8 p.m. local time. Firefighters arrived at the scene by helicopter. The man was rushed to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, where doctors in the emergency room declared him dead.
Mount Etna, situated on the Italian island of Sicily, is the tallest and most active volcano in Europe. It has been erupting since early August, causing significant disruptions, including the cancellation of numerous flights.
