Kamala Harris Leads 2028 Democratic Poll Among Young Voters

Kamala Harris Emerging as Young Democrats’ Choice

A recent poll places former Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of Michelle Obama and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among young Democratic voters. Harris was the preferred choice for 28.7 percent of Democrats aged 18 to 34. Michelle Obama followed with 14.9 percent, while Ocasio-Cortez received 11.7 percent. The survey was conducted by Axios-Generation Lab with 1,075 young adults from July 29 to August 4.

None of these women have announced intentions to run in 2028. Among young independents, Obama topped the list with 11.4 percent, trailed by Ocasio-Cortez at 9.2 percent and Bernie Sanders at 7.4 percent. Among young Republicans, Vice President JD Vance led with 31.5 percent, followed by Donald Trump Jr. at 10.7 percent and Marco Rubio at 9.7 percent.

Dissatisfaction Among Younger Voters

There is significant dissatisfaction among younger Americans. Sixty-six percent disapproved of Donald Trump’s presidency, and 96 percent expressed concern over living costs, such as rent, groceries, and utilities. Generation Lab CEO Cyrus Beschloss noted that young people’s dissatisfaction extends to the president, the economy, and both major parties.

The poll’s demographics showed 37 percent identified as Democrats, 26 percent as Republicans, and 29 percent as independents. The poll provided an overall margin of error of +/- 3.01 percentage points.

Perspectives on Harris, Obama, and Ocasio-Cortez

Harris’s support exceeds that of Obama and Ocasio-Cortez combined, with 26.6 percent between them, yet she does not command a majority. Harris has previously run for president and held nationwide office, serving as Vice President before losing the 2024 election to Trump. She chose not to run for California governor in 2026, keeping her presidential prospects open.

Obama’s performance is noteworthy given her lack of political office experience. Despite consistent public rejection of presidential ambitions, she performed better among independents than Democrats. She led independents with 11.4 percent support.

Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent progressive since her 2018 Congressional victory, advocates for policies on climate change, housing, and economic inequality. Despite her influence, she trailed Harris by 17 points among young Democrats and 3.2 points behind Obama.

Challenges Facing Trump and Republicans

The poll reveals young Americans’ widespread disapproval of Trump, with 66 percent disapproving, 54 percent strongly. Republicans lagged behind Democrats when asked which party respondents trust to lower living costs; 32 percent trusted Republicans, while 26 percent preferred Democrats. A majority, 36 percent, trusted neither party. This dissatisfaction impacts both major parties.

Despite these findings, past polls have underestimated Trump’s appeal. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comments in response to these results. In June, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle emphasized that the 2024 election serves as the ultimate gauge of Trump’s support, highlighting his efforts in job creation, inflation control, and housing affordability.
