The incident occurred early on a Friday morning as one plane tried to land from Chicago while another prepared for departure.
Recognizing the overlap, the controller ingeniously designated the flights as ‘American 2482 Departure’ and ‘American 2482 Arrival’ to avoid any confusion. His quick thinking ensured both aircraft were appropriately separated, allowing them to take off and land without any problems.
The controller reflected, ‘I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years. I’ve never seen two aircraft emerge with the same call sign. I’m glad it all worked out. It could have been disastrous.’
