Saying goodbye to a beloved pet ranks among life’s toughest challenges. Today, more pet owners turn to artificial intelligence to navigate the complex emotions of grief. A rising trend involves AI-generated letters from a pet’s perspective and interactive chatbots trained with photos, memories, and personality traits. These digital memorial tools help maintain a connection long after a pet’s death.
Certain platforms focus on grief support and memorialization. For instance, Karyad allows users to create ongoing messages or reflections from a passed pet based on shared memories. ToThereOn offers a digital sanctuary for pet loss healing, preserving stories, images, and conversational memories in an interactive format.
This trend reflects a shift in processing loss in the digital era, raising questions among grief experts about the boundary between remembrance and simulation. Bethany Hsia, a veterinarian and co-founder of CodaPet, noted the rise of AI grief tools was unsurprising due to emotional support gaps after pet loss.
“When families face a pet’s passing, there’s often a lack of emotional support,” Hsia shared. “Veterinarians receive some training for difficult conversations, but we are not grief counselors.”
Hsia described the “missed handoff” that occurs post-loss, leaving owners without their daily support system.
“As a veterinarian, I’ve observed how significant the void can be,” Hsia noted. “A pet often serves as a constant companion. When that presence vanishes, people experience a silence they weren’t prepared for.”
For many owners, AI softens this transition, providing a means to continue the companionship’s essence. Applications send messages inspired by a pet’s personality or create digital avatars to evoke comforting memories.
“People use AI to lessen the overwhelming silence,” Hsia stated. “For some, it’s about honoring a pet and preserving memories, rather than losing them.”
A Digital Extension of Grief
Research indicates maintaining a connection with a deceased pet, known as a “continuing bond,” is crucial in bereavement. Common methods include photos, memorials, journals, and online tribute pages. A 2022 review of pet loss studies in the OMEGA—Journal of Death and Dying noted these bonds help some cope and find meaning after a loss.
AI tools extend grieving practices, offering interactive and potentially immersive experiences. Whether these interactions are beneficial depends on their use.
The technology, as Hsia highlighted, aids when it allows emotional expression and remembrance but should not replace professional support if needed.
“If it’s helping someone process emotions and release grief, that’s positive. The concern arises when someone isn’t receiving needed support,” she said.
Ethical Questions
AI pet memorials spark ethical debates on technology’s role in grief. Advocates see these tools offering comfort during difficult times, while critics worry realistic simulations might hinder acceptance of a pet’s death.
Unlike traditional memorials, AI can generate new interactions, prompting questions about preserving memories or forming new post-loss relationships. Concerns also arise about privacy, data ownership, and grief commercialization as companies develop advanced memorial products.
Hsia believes the impact depends more on individual use than on technology itself.
“Grief is personal. What aids one person may not aid another,” she commented.
Hsia considers if AI companionship delays readiness to adopt new pets, but believes it won’t replace relationships with living animals.
“From a shelter background, I ponder if AI affects adoption readiness. But technology won’t replace the bond with a living pet,” Hsia added.
The Human Side of Pet Loss
Despite AI’s new remembrance methods, grieving owners continue seeking connections with others who share their loss. Online support groups, memorial communities, and social media remain active, as owners exchange stories, photos, and advice long after a pet’s passing.
Hsia observed, “People reach out, sharing memories and stories. There’s community in pet personality details.”
As AI becomes more prevalent, its role in grief is likely to grow. Whether a lasting part of pet bereavement or a tool among many, its popularity underscores a universal truth: the desire to maintain connection seldom fades.
