Christopher Anne Affleck, mother of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, passed away in June at the age of 82 after battling a terminal illness. The family announced her death on July 23. She bravely faced her diagnosis, which she received in December 2025.
The family described her greatest wish as living to see her grandson graduate high school. She achieved this dream by attending his graduation on May 31, 2026, alongside her family. She died peacefully in her sleep two days later.
Affleck was born in New York City in 1942 and dedicated 35 years to public education as a teacher in Massachusetts. Her teaching philosophy earned admiration as she embraced diverse students, treating each as a cherished citizen of her classroom.
A Harvard graduate, Affleck actively participated in civil rights movements. During Freedom Summer in 1964, she taught literacy classes to increase political awareness and engagement within the Black community. Affleck also took a stand against the Vietnam War.
In 1998, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon brought their mothers to the Academy Awards upon winning an Oscar for Good Will Hunting. This act demonstrated the importance of family support to them.
The family highlighted Affleck’s unique personality, noting that her unconventional spirit was evident from a young age. Her stepfather Sam, a WWII veteran, inspired her dedication to civil rights.
While attending Nightingale-Bamford School, Affleck challenged the norm. She questioned racial segregation during the Jim Crow era and directly engaged with issues troubling her.
Affleck humorously embraced a typo from her first email address, which dubbed her “Chritopher,” enjoying the error for twenty years.
Her five grandchildren became her life’s focus: Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam. She delighted in their questioning and challenging of authority.
After retiring in 2008, Affleck remained committed to activism. She volunteered for Barack Obama’s campaign, traveled to Palestine, and worked with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine. Her dedication extended to the Sustainable Cape Project in Truro.
Affleck welcomed her granddaughter’s activist group to her home for training sessions, participating and taking notes herself despite her health challenges.
Even after her diagnosis, Affleck continued to pursue social justice, organizing oral histories with a friend from the South Bronx.
Ben Affleck has shared his appreciation for his mother, recalling their Academy Awards experience in a Vanity Fair interview. He expressed disbelief at others’ surprise over their choice to bring their mothers, emphasizing the natural significance of family.
