Fire Destroys Adolf Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest Retreat

A significant fire has devastated Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat, the Eagle’s Nest, making the main building nearly unsalvageable. A suspect is currently in custody.

The incident occurred in Germany’s southern Bavaria region, where police reported deploying around 200 emergency responders to the Kehlsteinhaus site at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday (3:15 p.m. ET). Upon arrival, flames were visible from the remote Alpine location, requiring emergency teams to use breathing equipment.

Nobody was reported injured during the incident. However, the location above Berchtesgaden posed challenges for crews attempting to completely extinguish the fire. By early Saturday, the flames were still active.

A police representative informed Germany’s Bild newspaper that the property’s damage is extensive, rendering it unlikely to be salvaged.

Authorities are investigating a potential arson, with a motorcyclist detained near the scene. Additionally, police have taken a ‘suspicious person’ into custody, with prosecutors in Traunstein now handling the inquiry into the fire’s origin.

No details about the suspect’s identity or any possible motive have been disclosed. This situation is developing, with more updates anticipated.
