Denver Broncos coach, Sean Payton, expressed his frustration with what he views as careless sports TV analysis. He is particularly unimpressed with analyses made by former NFL players, who he believes should have insight into the quarterback evaluation process. This sentiment arose when Geoff Schwartz, former offensive lineman-turned-TV-analyst, mischaracterized Broncos quarterback Bo Nix on national television.
During an appearance on ‘First Things First,’ Schwartz joined a panel debating whether Nix was set for a major improvement in his second year or would remain at a plateau. Schwartz claimed Nix was essentially the same as he had been during his college days. Schwartz stated, ‘He looks like the same quarterback he was in college… He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often.’
Nix has thrown the most touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards in the NFL since the start of the 2024 season, with 19 including the postseason, which challenges Schwartz’s remarks.
These statistics highlight Nix’s effectiveness in deep-ball scenarios, contradicting Schwartz’s opinion. Though Nix is still developing as a player and discussions about his potential are reasonable, portraying him as a quarterback who avoids long passes does not align with his performance on the field.
Coach Payton noticed Schwartz’s take and bluntly offered his feedback, stating, ‘Always easy to tell who works at it and who doesn’t.’ Payton directly criticized the effort put into Schwartz’s analysis.
The expectation for former players turned analysts is to provide insights beyond typical debate-show remarks, making Schwartz’s claim more conspicuous. Nix’s record in long passes is noticeable and directly disputes Schwartz’s argument. Although discussing Nix’s limitations as a passer is valid, suggesting he rarely throws deep passes lacks factual support.
