Kirk Cousins currently leads as the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, but all eyes are on Fernando Mendoza, a top draft pick signaling the future of the team.
Mendoza saw initial NFL playtime in a recent match against the New England Patriots, where the Raiders faced a 45-17 loss. He managed to complete 6 of 8 passes, totaling 48 yards during the final moments of the game.
As Mendoza prepares to step into the QB1 role fully, the Raiders acknowledge a need for more offensive options. Presently, the team’s roster is top-heavy with tight ends like Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, along with running back Ashton Jeanty. The primary receiving option, Tre Tucker, has recorded 19 catches for 274 yards and one touchdown over five games. However, his performance does not quite reach that of a leading NFL wide receiver.
This situation has prompted Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report to suggest that the Raiders explore trade possibilities. Knox recommends the Raiders consider trading for Brian Thomas Jr. from the Jacksonville Jaguars, a player who appears to be under-utilized in his current team.
“The return that Arizona got for (Marvin) Harrison Jr. could change Jacksonville’s stance (on trading Thomas Jr.),” Knox wrote. “Thomas was a revelation for the Jaguars as a rookie but has steadily fallen out of the game plan since. … With rookie receiver Josh Cameron (117 yards, 2 TDs) beginning to gain traction, cashing in Thomas now could make a ton of sense.”
Brian Thomas Jr., at only 24 years old, is a compelling option; during his rookie season, he achieved an impressive 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. Comparing prospective draft picks like Rutgers’ K.J. Duff or Florida State’s Duce Robinson, Thomas appears to offer greater immediate value.
Knox indicates that the Jaguars may ask for a similar trade arrangement to what the Cardinals received for Harrison Jr., potentially involving 2027 second- and sixth-round picks. This trade could be worthwhile for the Raiders, considering Thomas Jr.’s proven capabilities on the field.
