Frank Beard of ZZ Top Passes Away at 77

Frank Beard, the drummer for the renowned Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top, has passed away at 77. He died on Tuesday in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family, according to publicist Bob Merlis.

Beard’s contribution to ZZ Top is notable. He was the rhythmic foundation for the band’s hits like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’.” His drumming was a key element in the band’s sound and success.

Band co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, who is currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, expressed his admiration and sorrow in a statement. Gibbons referred to Beard as a “great friend and collaborator” and praised him as “one of the most naturally innovative drummers” and a “great and true son of Texas.” Gibbons emphasized Beard’s importance to the band’s rhythm and success. He also revealed that the band plans to continue performing, honoring Beard’s wishes.

ZZ Top’s achievements are significant. The band sold over 50 million records and topped Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with six singles. Additionally, seven of their albums reached the Billboard 200’s Top 10, and they garnered three Grammy Award nominations.

Beard’s words in the 2019 documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas” reflect his dedication. He stated, “I’ve found the people I was meant to play with. I never wanted to quit, and never wanted to get fired.”
