ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Passes Away at 77

Frank Beard, the longtime drummer for ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77. The band confirmed his passing to CBS News. Beard was in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family when he died Monday. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Beard was a founding member of ZZ Top, which he formed in 1969 alongside guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill. Hill passed away in 2021 and was succeeded by his bass tech, Elwood Francis, at Hill’s request.

“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top,” Gibbons stated on social media.

A memorable performance by Frank Beard took place during the $20 Best Night Ever Tour at DTE Energy Center on August 20, 2013, in Clarkston, Michigan.

Following Beard’s death, ZZ Top canceled their scheduled performances in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. However, the tour is set to continue at Austin City Limits this weekend, a venue beloved by Beard, located in a city he considered a second home.
