This thrilling race will set the streets of Washington, D.C. ablaze with speed and excitement. Drivers talked about the course’s distinctive street layout and the unparalleled experience of racing near some of America’s most renowned landmarks.
The Indianapolis 500, known as the highlight of the NTT IndyCar Series, is often called “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Yet, this time, the spotlight turns to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. This event promises to be among the series’ grandest endeavors, featuring America’s top open-wheel series cars racing past iconic sites.
IndyCar drivers Joseph Newgarden and Kyle Kirkwood highlighted the unique chance to honor America by racing through Washington, D.C.’s streets.
Newgarden, part of Team Penske and a two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, stressed the importance of this unique opportunity. “We don’t know when we’ll have another chance to race in our nation’s capital with an IndyCar,” he shared, expressing his intent to seize this chance and win with Team Penske while representing the country.
As work on the Washington, D.C. street circuit continues, Kirkwood of Andretti Global feels optimistic. A consistent contender in street circuits, he praised the setup, which features a start-finish line with the U.S. Capitol Building as the backdrop. “This has been months in the making, weaving through Pennsylvania Avenue and past the museums,” Kirkwood noted. “The scenery is beautiful; we’re anticipating 100,000 people over the two days. As drivers, we can’t wait. It’s going to be spectacular.”
Practice kicks off on Saturday morning, followed by qualifying in the early evening. The Grand Prix starts at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, with pre-race coverage beginning at 11:30 a.m. on FOX.
