Former NBA player Royce White announced his intention to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft. White, now identifying as transgender, is the second former NBA player making such a declaration, following Enes Kanter Freedom’s announcement.
Royce White stated, “I’m transgender. I’m a woman.” He expressed confidence, saying, “I think I’d be unstoppable,” highlighting his team-first approach and versatile skill set. White led Iowa State University in major stat categories, showcasing his all-around ability.
“I think the WNBA could come out and make a definitive statement about guys with a pair of balls playing in the Women’s Association,” said White.
White challenged the WNBA to clarify its stance on transgender athletes and emphasized his desire for fair treatment. He plans legal action if undrafted, citing potential discrimination issues.
Royce White, who was on the ballot for Minnesota’s Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, expressed preference for playing with the Minnesota Lynx. He praised head coach Cheryl Reeve for her support of transgender youth.
White emphasized his competitive advantage, citing his size and ability to handle the basketball. He predicted trouble for current WNBA players facing his physical presence.
The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement stipulates eligibility for “women,” without further defining the term. This has prompted debate, as the Women’s National Basketball Players Association issued a statement supporting diversity and inclusion.
With respect for women’s basketball, White noted his sister’s Division I play and coaching from Nancy Lieberman. He acknowledged the skill difference between male and female athletes.
White proposed team-up ideas with Enes Kanter Freedom, envisioning multiple championships. He inquired about specific criteria required to compete in the WNBA.
