Garcia is having a standout season, batting .283 with a 3.13 on-base percentage and leading the National League with a .560 slugging percentage. Over 104 games, he has hit 23 home runs and collected 76 RBIs, earning a 134 wRC+. This trade aims to address the Yankees’ offensive struggles amid the absence of Aaron Judge, a three-time MVP.
Before playing first base this season, Garcia spent six seasons as the Nationals’ second baseman, but the Yankees already have Jazz Chisholm Jr., a two-time All-Star, at second base. At first base, Ben Rice is performing at an MVP level in Judge’s absence, while Paul Goldschmidt has been effective splitting time there after re-signing with the Yankees.
Garcia may rotate between designated hitter, first base, and second base to frequently appear in Aaron Boone’s lineup. Though Garcia could return to second base, Chisholm might move to third base as he has played there before. However, Garcia’s performance as a second baseman was subpar defensively, prompting his move to first base.
It’s important to consider that Chisholm will become a free agent after the 2026 season, potentially allowing Garcia to return to second base permanently next year. Throughout his career with the Nationals, Garcia has achieved a slash line of .268/.301/.431 with 81 home runs and 345 RBIs over 708 games.
