Willie Nelson’s Plea for Environmental Awareness
Country music icon Willie Nelson, at 93, calls on Americans to reconsider the future. On Tuesday, he urged fans to resist the encroachment of data centers on rural land through a message on social media.
Nelson shared memories of viewing “stars at night” in his Texas hometown, Abbott, lamenting the threat posed by light pollution and water depletion due to industrial development. “I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night,” Nelson stated. “Now, our community, like many others, needs to fight against data centers invading our land.”
The Impact of Data Centers
Nelson criticized data centers as noisy, water-extracting, and light-polluting additions to towns. He emphasized rural America’s strength as rooted in its open spaces, local enterprises, and deep connection to the land, not industrial impacts. “All of America deserves thoughtful stewardship that doesn’t steal farmland (where our essential shared-food is grown) and small family farmers’ livelihoods,” Nelson explained, “and not data centers that only destroy the environment around them.”
Reflecting on resource control, the singer noted, “Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses. Let’s not allow our own demise or give up control over necessary resources in the U.S. and especially in Abbott.” His call for conservation aligns with his advocacy efforts over decades.
Longstanding Environmental Advocacy
Nelson has championed environmental causes, raising over $90 million through Farm Aid, a nonprofit he co-launched with John Mellencamp and Neil Young in 1985. Farm Aid aims to support family farms and prevent land loss.
Political Support for Banning Data Centers
Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined the call against data centers in rural areas, proposing a ban during a campaign visit in Bullard, as reported by the Texas Tribune. “We must prohibit them from building AI data centers in rural Texas neighborhoods,” he stated.
Abbott also demanded these centers fund their own operations and reduce their electricity impact on residents. “Any AI data center even thinking about coming here — they got to bring their own money, bring their own power, reuse their own water,” he emphasized.
