Coach Kyle Shanahan made an appearance at the San Francisco 49ers’ practice despite recovering from a car accident that occurred on July 14. He briefly observed the players and interacted with a few, marking a significant presence in the team’s training camp.
Shanahan suffered a concussion and multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a broken nose, and a broken hand. Due to these injuries, Shanahan has temporarily handed over team responsibilities to assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster. Shanahan’s return is expected once his concussion symptoms subside.
Foerster steps in with confidence, having decades of experience in the NFL. His leadership reassures the team, which is equipped with veteran players and coaches familiar with Shanahan’s plans and strategies. Foerster commented on his new temporary role, noting minimal changes to the practice regimen, with the camp focusing heavily on previously established offseason plans.
Formerly, Foerster served under Shanahan when he was an offensive coordinator in Washington, joining the 49ers in 2019. Despite past controversies, Foerster appreciates Shanahan’s and the organization’s continued support, emphasizing his close-knit relationship with Shanahan.
Veteran tackle Trent Williams expressed pride in Foerster’s capabilities and familiarity with the team’s dynamics, noting Foerster’s long-standing experience in the league.
“He’s been doing this longer than everybody in that locker room been alive, probably except for me,” remarked Williams.
On the field, star defensive end Nick Bosa participated in individual drills as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL suffered last year. Despite the severity of his injury, Bosa appears strong and capable in his return.
Additional news from practice includes OL Vederian Lowe’s early departure due to an ankle injury. CB Nate Hobbs was absent from practice, and DT Kevin Givens signed with the team after the departure of Evan Anderson. Connor Colby is expected to compete for the starting left guard position, following his rookie season with six starts.
