The people of Banda, a northern Indian town, endure extreme heat, impacting daily life significantly. Rising temperatures linked to global warming persist across India, with Banda often recording the highest highs. In 2023, a severe heatwave claimed at least 119 lives in Uttar Pradesh, where Banda is located. The heat strain continues with temperatures peaking at 48.2 Celsius (118.8 Fahrenheit).
Morning: Market Workers Battle the Heat
At 4 a.m., Banda’s temperature already reaches 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit). Munni Devi, a 70-year-old market worker, begins her day unloading vegetables with her sons. The sweltering heat, intensified yearly, poses a significant challenge. Despite the demanding conditions, Devi can’t skip work due to financial needs. Shoppers arrive early to avoid rising temperatures, while unreliable electricity at home fails to provide relief, even denying basic fan use.
Afternoon: Helping Birds Cope with Heat
In the searing afternoon sun, some seek shelter indoors. Yet, animal lover Shobharam Kashyap constructs birdhouses to protect local sparrows from harsh conditions. His initiative includes installing over 15,000 birdhouses and providing clay water bowls for birds to drink or cool off. Kashyap preserves traditional practices, emphasizing feeding birds as part of cultural heritage.
Evening: Heat-Related Illness Surges
As the day progresses, Banda’s hospital sees a spike in heat-related illnesses. Dr. Abhishek Pranayami notes increased admissions for dehydration, diarrhea, and heatstroke, causing crowded corridors. The medical staff faces heightened pressure while managing these cases, which manifest mainly in the afternoon and evening.
Night: Seeking Comfort Outdoors
Even night brings little relief. Residents often head to Banda’s railway station to escape the oppressive heat in their homes. Many choose to sleep on the cooler station platforms, alongside parked trains and against the rail noise. For families with children, the discomfort is acute, leading them to gather around digital devices for distraction.
Climate change is shifting the average. Banda has always been known for hot summers; now it’s about intensity, duration, and exposure,”says Abhiyant Tiwari, a climate and health expert.
Local authorities, led by District Magistrate Amit Aasery, have initiated measures like opening cooling centers and distributing oral rehydration solutions. However, broader efforts are constrained by global factors tied to climate change. Despite improving infrastructure and raising awareness, Banda continues to endure the escalating burdens of heat.
