Monica Lewinsky has shared her experiences of dealing with shame and finding self-acceptance. Recently, on her podcast “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky,” she spoke with actress Jamie Lynn Sigler about Sigler’s memoir. Lewinsky discussed how the concept of acceptance resonated with her own journey.
“Acceptance is crucial for reclaiming oneself,” she said. “You can’t progress until you’ve embraced all parts of your life, including the past.” Lewinsky emphasized her efforts to integrate her past as a White House intern into her life without shame. She acknowledged the extensive work needed for self-acceptance.
“It’s hard enough out there. How do I make it not so hard in here?”
In 1998, Lewinsky became the focus of intense media scrutiny due to her affair with President Bill Clinton. This public attention led to significant ridicule and shame. Despite this, she now values when her friends seek her support during tough times.
Lewinsky described her past “dark decade” as a period without reprieve, highlighting the ongoing challenges she faced. She shared her belief that enduring these issues and surviving them is “miraculous.” Her ability to disassociate helped her navigate the overwhelming scandal.
Before 1998, Lewinsky noted she was adept at disassociation. “I had a rich fantasy life,” she said, a tool that protected her during tumultuous times. In May, she told Fox News Digital about the “very dark moments” she experienced. She openly admitted the heaviness of being judged by “billions of strangers.” Part of her healing has included extensive “energy work” over 20 years.
“Energy work has played a significant role,” Lewinsky explained, acknowledging its importance in filtering the negativity directed at her.
The scandal eventually led to Bill Clinton’s impeachment on charges including perjury, yet he was acquitted.
