Embattled U.S. Senate Candidate Faces New Allegations

Graham Platner, a U.S. Senate candidate from Maine, is under scrutiny following new allegations of sexual misconduct. These emerge shortly after a previous accusation of rape, adding pressure as a critical campaign deadline approaches.

New Allegations

The Washington Post reports that Platner allegedly removed condoms during intercourse without consent from his ex-girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield. Fifield claims he ignored her explicit instructions to wear them. “He would pull condoms off,” she stated, describing his actions as deceitful.

Previously, Fifield accused Platner of physical misconduct. She described incidents where he allegedly left marks on her body and once twisted her arm, pushing her into a bedroom. Platner’s supporters dismissed these claims, labeling Fifield, a former Heritage Foundation worker, as a conservative operative.

Platner’s campaign refutes Fifield’s latest allegations, calling them “categorically false and politically motivated.” Platner aims to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Previous Allegations

An earlier accusation from Jenny Racicot adds gravity to Platner’s situation. She alleges that in 2021, Platner raped her while he was intoxicated, despite her protests. Racicot detailed the forcefulness of the incident, emphasizing her sense of losing control during the encounter.

Platner denies Racicot’s allegations as well, addressing them in a video statement. He mentioned considering the campaign’s next steps with an impending deadline to withdraw from the race by July 13 if needed.

Political Impact

The allegations have led to significant fallout, with key political figures retracting their support. Progressive Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, once strong advocates, have called for Platner to exit the race. They emphasize the need for leaders who reflect values of accountability, particularly regarding sexual assault claims.

Warren emphasized the importance of Democratic success in Maine to hold influential figures accountable, suggesting Platner step aside. Similarly, Sanders urged Platner to consider backing out due to the serious nature of the accusations.
