Willson Contreras: A Decade of Baseball Milestones

Willson Contreras started his major league baseball career with a memorable pinch-hit home run during his first at-bat with the Chicago Cubs. This took place in a 10-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on June 19, 2016. During that historic season for Chicago, Contreras, then 24, had climbed through the Cubs’ farm system to join notable players like Miguel Montero and David Ross.

Despite skepticism from some, such as a minor-league manager who told him he’d never make the majors, Contreras persisted. He played a crucial role in the Cubs’ championship team and developed into a four-time All-Star. Contreras is currently having one of his best seasons with the Boston Red Sox. Before facing the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, he was hitting .284 with 20 home runs, 59 RBIs, and a .920 OPS, ranking high among American League players in these categories.

Contreras had many farewells with the Cubs before departing as a free agent to join the St. Louis Cardinals after the 2022 season. Recently, he was named as a replacement for the American League All-Star team due to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. opting out. Next week, he will play in Philadelphia alongside his brother William Contreras, the catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers.

“As a kid, you have a dream for sure,” Contreras said prior to Tuesday’s game. “We all have dreams, and Willie and I will dream big. But it’s a long way from dreaming to working hard and making it happen.”

Contreras is looking forward to sharing the field with his brother and others from the 2016 Cubs team, including Kyle Schwarber. While he missed a reunion event earlier this year, he plans to reconnect with David Ross and Anthony Rizzo on their podcast “Lovable Reunion” during the offseason.

Known for being outspoken, Contreras has often faced controversy. Recently, he was involved in a bench-clearing incident and received a seven-game suspension after a heated encounter with Cade Cavalli of the Washington Nationals. Cavalli later expressed regret and planned to apologize. Contreras remains open to discussing the matter with Cavalli. “I don’t hold grudges,” Contreras stated, highlighting the importance of recognizing and apologizing for mistakes.

If the Red Sox decide on a mid-season team change, Contreras is aware he might be considered for trade. However, he expressed a preference for staying in Boston, emphasizing his contentment with the team and city.

“This is a special place to be,” Contreras noted. “I respect the expectations here.”

Contreras reflects on a decade-long career filled with notable moments, from being a frequent target for pitchers to memorable bat flips. Even after many on-field altercations, including an infamous incident during the 2020 pandemic season against the White Sox, Contreras stays committed. “If I have to do it again, I’ll do it again,” he stated confidently.

A light-hearted moment came when a reporter humorously asked if his contract includes fighting bonuses. “I wish,” he replied with a chuckle. Ten years since his major league debut, Contreras continues to be a vibrant presence in the game.
