Britain’s Potential New Prime Minister’s Plan for Decentralization

Andy Burnham, poised to become Britain’s next prime minister, has announced a significant shift in his government’s approach. He intends to decentralize power from London to other cities across Britain. A highlight of his plan includes establishing an operation called ‘No. 10 North’ in Manchester, aimed at providing more funding and autonomy to local leaders.

Mr. Burnham arrives following his extensive tenure as the mayor of Greater Manchester, spanning nine years. He was recently elected to Parliament and has emerged as the leading candidate to replace the resigning Keir Starmer as the Labour Party leader and prime minister. As of now, no other contenders have stepped forward for this position, increasing the likelihood of Mr. Burnham stepping into Downing Street in the coming weeks.

During a speech delivered in Manchester, Mr. Burnham proposed a decade-long initiative to boost living standards. His strategy includes re-industrialization efforts, expansive housing projects, welfare system reforms, and enhanced state control over key utilities. He described these measures as necessary for providing Britain with the ‘circuit-breaker’ it needs, noting the country’s overly centralized nature and current political challenges.

Mr. Burnham pledged what he called the ‘biggest rebalancing of power’ the nation has ever observed, which encompasses purposeful public interventions to achieve higher economic goals. He voiced strong opposition to the ‘trickle-down’ economic theory, emphasizing a shift away from relying solely on market distribution of economic benefits.
