On May 27, 2026, FIFA World Cup signage was displayed at the World Trade Center transportation hub in New York, indicating preparations for the upcoming event. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, and the city expects significant visitor influx.
During the World Cup, New York City and New Jersey will implement various transit modifications to accommodate the crowds. This period might coincide with the NBA championship series between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, adding to the excitement.
“It’s not just the Knicks, it’s the Knicks-plus, what a year,” commented New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a press conference. She invited tourists to visit the city, despite the large-scale events. The Knicks are scheduled to play the Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8 and 10, with a potential third game on June 16.
The New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., will host the first of eight World Cup matches on June 13, featuring Brazil versus Morocco.
Transportation Adjustments
On Thursday, Governor Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani outlined plans to manage the anticipated increase in mass transit riders. The Metropolitan Transit Authority will take measures to support up to 100,000 additional riders on game days.
“We [normally] handle 6 million riders a day, so this is something within our control,” said Hochul. Adjustments include expanded bus and subway services, and temporary traffic changes to facilitate smoother travel for buses and emergency vehicles. There will also be restrictions on construction and deliveries to help ease congestion.
Despite the preparations, Mamdani acknowledged that increased road congestion is likely on game days. He advised New Yorkers to use public transport options like biking, subways, or walking, especially when traveling into Midtown Manhattan.
Event Planning and Security
Officials are preparing for a possible NBA Finals game in Manhattan on June 16, coinciding with the World Cup match between France and Senegal. “This is a moment we’ve been preparing for, and we feel fully prepared,” Mamdani asserted.
Security measures have also been bolstered. Hochul explained that the city will see increased police presence, while behind the scenes, cyber-analysts and experts are actively working on safety measures. Crime on the NYC subway system is currently at a 16-year low, providing some reassurance.
Mamdani added that preparations also account for extreme weather conditions like high heat or flash floods.
The final World Cup match will take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
