The Stanley Cup Final opened on Tuesday with a thrilling match. The Vegas Golden Knights secured a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina struck first with Nikolaj Ehlers scoring the series’ initial goal. Ehlers later added another goal in the period.
Vegas, however, responded strongly. Tomas Hertl scored the decisive game-winner, marking his second such goal in three games. Remarkably, Hertl had experienced a 29-game goal drought earlier this postseason. His former San Jose Sharks teammate, Joe Pavelski, found that stat surprising.
“I knew he wasn’t producing much,” Pavelski shared with NHL.com. “When I heard 29 games, I was like, ‘What?’ But they mentioned his numerous scoring opportunities.”
Pavelski, feeling the need to support his friend, reached out to Hertl. “My old teammate Joe called me,” Hertl mentioned to Sportsnet. “His advice was invaluable. He’s an outstanding goal scorer and his insights boosted my confidence.”
Hertl’s goal resurgence began with scores in Games 4 and 5 against Anaheim, followed by another crucial goal against Colorado in Game 3. His latest performance against Carolina demonstrates the importance of players finding form at crucial times. Brett Howden also contributed significantly, leading the Golden Knights with 11 postseason goals, following his 12 regular season goals.
Pavelski humbly commented on his call to Hertl: “I didn’t do anything remarkable. I simply reached out as a friend to check in. He was performing well and needed only a reminder of a few simple strategies, and he’s been outstanding since.”
