Bilton defended Weiss, stating her love for ’60 Minutes’ and her commitment to its success.
Pelley told Bilton, “She’s murdering ‘60 Minutes.’ She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it.”
CBS leaders attempted to address Pelley’s concerns privately. A CBS insider revealed that Weiss and Bilton reached out to Pelley, emphasizing his importance to ’60 Minutes.’ They expressed disappointment that Pelley chose to voice his frustrations publicly.
The New York Times confirmed hearing the meeting’s recording. An executive explained that Weiss was ready to attend, but others advised her against it.
Memo and Leadership Changes
The meeting followed a memo by Weiss, outlining a ‘new approach’ for ’60 Minutes.’ Introduced last October, Weiss has brought changes that stirred debates. In the memo, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski expressed the need for the newsmagazine to evolve.
The memo outlines goals like expanding ’60 Minutes’ beyond its traditional format. It aims to integrate the show more within CBS News. The leadership believes Bilton is well-suited to achieve these aims.
During the meeting, Pelley received support from colleagues. Status reported that others applauded Pelley as he spoke. He described the recent firings as cruel. In response, Bilton maintained his stance, asserting his extensive journalism experience and resilience in the face of criticism.
