Jazz Chisholm Jr., the New York Yankees second baseman, might be facing some discomfort. After overcoming initial season challenges, Chisholm’s progress was interrupted during a game when a foul ball incident occurred.
During the fourth inning against the Chicago White Sox, Chisholm fouled a pitch that led to an unfortunate injury. The ball bounced off the ground and hit him, causing significant pain and requiring medical assessment. Anthony Volpe substituted for Chisholm as the injury was not easily resolved.
Previously, Chisholm had promised to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases. While he struggled in his first 21 games with a .164 average and no home runs, he improved significantly in his following 49 games, hitting .254 with an .811 OPS. These numbers surpassed his career averages and matched last year’s performance.
The Yankees have been dealing with several injuries. Aaron Judge is sidelined with a broken rib, Giancarlo Stanton has calf issues, and Trent Grisham and Max Fried are also injured. Despite these setbacks, the Yankees are leading the American League East by three games.
Currently, only the Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, and Seattle Mariners have records above .500 in the American League, allowing New York to capitalize on their position. However, the Yankees can only endure so many more injuries to key players.
