President Donald Trump often voiced his dissatisfaction with the belief that the United States no longer triumphs in wars. He attributed this issue to what he referred to as “wokeness” and “political correctness.” In response to this concern, last year he initiated efforts to address it by renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War.
Trump’s Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, supported this rebranding initiative. He argued that the department needed to focus on “fighting to win” by conducting warfare with “maximum lethality,” avoiding what he described as “tepid legality.” Hegseth’s support indicated a shift towards a more aggressive military strategy.
This change in approach reflects Trump’s overall stance on military engagement, emphasizing decisive and forceful action. The rebranding aligns with his broader efforts to increase the effectiveness of U.S. military operations and reduce perceived constraints that, in his view, hinder success in warfare.
