Significant Restructuring at Xbox
Xbox has announced a major overhaul, marking the most significant restructure in its history. The changes aim to transform the company’s approach to consoles, game development, and the customer experience. On Monday, Microsoft revealed plans to lay off 4,800 employees, with 1,600 immediate reductions at its Xbox division. The focus will shift to priorities that ensure Microsoft’s position in a rapidly evolving industry.
Asha Sharma, who took over Xbox leadership in February, stated that four game-development studios will move to new ownership, leading to further layoffs. Sharma emphasized that these changes align with a larger vision for Xbox, predicting a future of more global and creative gaming. She confirmed investment levels matching previous years but with greater focus and discipline.
Anticipated Changes and Financial Context
These announcements come after ongoing financial struggles and a shrinking market share for Xbox. Microsoft’s latest quarterly report showed a 7% year-over-year decline in gaming revenue, plus a 33% drop in Xbox hardware revenue, despite earnings growth in other sectors. Challenges include narrow margins, hardware component crises, and skewed investment priorities.
Sharma acknowledged the current business health is poor, operating at margins significantly lower than similar platforms and publishing businesses. The restructuring aims to make the unit leaner and more centralized, focusing on high-growth projects. Studios like Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs will be separated from Xbox. Meanwhile, King and Mojang will report directly to Sharma.
Impact on Gamers and Gaming Strategy
The restructuring means fewer studios and employees, but an intensified focus on Xbox’s core business and major franchises. Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst with Ampere Analysis, noted the renewed attention on prominent IPs and games with substantial audiences.
Studios producing niche games not driving Game Pass subscriptions are deemed better outside Xbox, hence the spinoffs. Xbox assured that no Xbox-owned games in production would be canceled. Ninja Theory secured funding to complete Senua as part of the Hellblade series, and Undead Labs confirmed State of Decay 3’s release despite ownership changes.
Harding-Rolls mentioned Xbox’s strategy would enhance franchises like Minecraft, competing with Roblox and Fortnite, and focus on Candy Crush. Xbox’s challenges include investment in Game Pass and multi-platform publishing, which did not meet growth expectations.
The restructure could lead to more affordable Game Pass options. A price drop for Game Pass Ultimate is already in effect, and an ad-supported version may surface. A next-gen console is projected for 2028.
