White Sox Rise to the Top
Davis Martin, a right-handed starter, shared his enthusiasm about the Chicago White Sox’s current position at the top of the American League Central. This marks an impressive change for the team that previously faced over 100 losses in each of the last three years. This is the first instance since 2021 where the White Sox have held such a position this late in the season. Martin expressed the motivation and excitement experienced by the team, stating, “It makes all the days worth it. It makes the long road trips worth it. We have a bunch of entertainers and we have a bunch of guys who make each other laugh.”
The White Sox demonstrated their prowess with a 2-1 victory against the Atlanta Braves, Major League Baseball’s top team, in front of a crowd of 14,627 at Rate Field. Martin, boasting a record of 9-2, delivered six shutout innings, allowing six hits and compiling six strikeouts, ultimately outdueling former White Sox star Chris Sale, who gave up two runs in his 5 2/3 innings.
“And I was just like, ‘man, this is fun.’ This is who you want to play against and this is why you want to be in the big leagues.” – Davis Martin
Key Contributions to Success
Rookie Braden Montgomery played a significant role in the White Sox’s victory, contributing two doubles. His noteworthy performance included a walk-off home run during his major-league debut earlier in the series. Montgomery managed to hit doubles against both Sale and James Karinchak, showcasing his capability as a switch hitter.
White Sox right fielder Braden Montgomery expressed his awareness of playing against a Hall of Famer, stating, “(Sale) is obviously one of the greats in the game, so you’ve really got to find the balance between blocking out that you are playing against a Hall of Famer and locking in and trying to put together quality at-bats to get a win.”
Challenges and Rivalries
Colson Montgomery, a prominent shortstop for the White Sox, missed his second consecutive game due to back tightness. He assured fans that the condition was manageable and planned to return Thursday. “We’re just trying to get ahead of it, so we thought this was the best thing to do,” Colson Montgomery explained.
Fellow players commented on the excitement generated by Braden Montgomery, with Colson mentioning his own “Fear of Missing Out.” Despite humor from others comparing their performances, Colson emphasized their brother-like relationship, saying, “He’s like my brother. That’s how we go about that relationship.”
This series brought attention to the Acuña family, with Ronald Jr., a Braves outfielder, and Luisangel, a Sox infielder, facing each other on the same major-league field for only the second time in their careers. Ronald was placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a hamstring injury during the series.
“It’s exciting for me to play against him because when I was a kid, I would dream about playing here with him or against him. We were able to make that dream come true.” – Luisangel Acuña
