White Sox Prepare for Wild-Card Series Against Astros

The Chicago White Sox aim to change their fortunes against the Houston Astros in the upcoming American League wild-card series. The series opens on Tuesday at Daikin Park in Houston. Sox manager Will Venable expressed optimism despite recent challenges. He acknowledged the Astros’ strong lineup featuring Yordan Alvarez and their impressive pitching staff.

The Astros secured the AL West title, finishing with a dominant 9-0 win over the Athletics in West Sacramento, California. The decisive victory came after the Texas Rangers dropped a 6-4 game to the Minnesota Twins, ensuring Houston’s division win. Meanwhile, the White Sox concluded their regular season with a 4-2 triumph over the Colorado Rockies. Randal Grichuk and Brenton Doyle powered the offense with their two-run homers. Starting pitcher Anthony Kay excelled, allowing just one run across five innings.

Reflecting on the season finale, Venable praised Kay’s performance, highlighting his effective use of the changeup. He also noted the impact of the Sox’s offensive plays. Grichuk emphasized the fresh start the playoffs present, stating, “What are you going to do for me in the playoffs?”

As the sixth seed in the playoffs, the Sox head to Houston, having narrowly missed the AL Central title. They suffered a setback with a loss to the Rockies, coupled with a Cleveland Guardians win that clinched the division for the Guardians. The series opener and second game will both air at 4 p.m. on Peacock and NBCSN, all games being hosted by the Astros in Houston. This season, the Sox had a 2-5 record against the Astros, including losing three of four games in Houston from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

Grichuk commented on the team’s mentality, expressing confidence. The Sox highlight their significant moments against Houston, notably Munetaka Murakami’s two homers and six RBIs in one standout game on July 26. Their strategy against MVP candidate Alvarez kept him to a .200 average with no homers in seven games.

The Sox are formulating their pitching strategy for the series. Venable mentioned upcoming discussions to finalize their approach. The team’s resurgence this season is noteworthy, with a dramatic improvement from 60 wins last year to 84 this year, the best turnaround following three consecutive 100-loss seasons in major league history.

As they look ahead, Grichuk stressed the need to focus only on the games to come, dismissing any past performances. The season’s home attendance of 1,986,419 marked the second-best in 15 years and the largest since 2022. The White Sox are ready for the next challenge Houston presents in the wild-card series.
