John Tortorella’s Surprising Departure
It’s common for a coach who leads a team to the Stanley Cup Final to retain their position, regardless of the outcome. However, former Vegas Golden Knights coach John Tortorella is an exception. Despite stepping in with only eight games remaining in the regular season, he directed the team to its third Cup Final appearance in nine seasons.
Decision Follows Defeat
After losing Game 6 to the Carolina Hurricanes, Vegas swiftly announced Tortorella’s departure, replacing him with Ryan Craig, coach of the AHL affiliate Henderson Silver Knights. Tortorella expressed his feelings about the sudden decision in an interview, stating, “I guess the word I’d use is ‘disappointed.'” He further explained that he met with Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon the morning after the game, and McCrimmon was straightforward about the change. “Kelly is very honest, and he let me know within one minute of sitting down in that meeting — he basically told me, ‘Ryan Craig is coaching the team next year.'” Tortorella appreciated the candid conversation and respected the organization’s direction.
Tortorella remarked, “We didn’t finish the job, and I wanted some more time with that club to try to finish the job. That’s not my call. That’s the general manager and president’s call.”
The decision marks another gamble by the Golden Knights, famous for embodying the city’s risk-taking spirit. Craig was seen as a potential successor, and the organization likely wanted to retain him after investing in his growth.
Tortorella’s Impact
Tortorella, who won the Stanley Cup 22 years ago, had the team performing impressively, making the decision to replace him noteworthy. Nonetheless, leadership chose to proceed with Craig at the helm.
As the new season approaches, the front office may face scrutiny if the team struggles early. The Golden Knights’ last bold move, replacing Bruce Cassidy with Tortorella, had proven successful, yet time will tell if this decision pays off.
