Uruguay Team Faces Security Delay Ahead of FIFA World Cup Match in Miami

The Uruguay men’s soccer team encountered another security challenge upon their arrival in Miami for their initial FIFA World Cup game. Their journey had already been disrupted by significant delays due to paperwork issues on their flight from Mexico to the U.S.

On Monday, a video circulated on social media depicting the team outside their bus as they prepared for their match against Saudi Arabia at Miami Stadium. Security personnel and sniffer dogs thoroughly inspected their luggage. Notably, some team members appeared cheerful, while others, such as Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte, appeared serious.

The video’s unclear location and timing showed recognizable players like Ronald Araújo, identified by his distinctive blue hair. They were dressed in outfits matching those broadcasted prior to the game. Newsweek sought comments from the Uruguayan Football Association regarding the incident and travel delays.

Uruguay’s difficulties began with a troublesome journey to the U.S. The team planned to depart from Cancún, near their training site in Playa del Carmen, to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday afternoon. However, missing paperwork for the FIFA-provided flight caused their delay in Mexico. Alternative travel arrangements also faced setbacks.

“Due to an airline permitting error in Mexico, the Uruguay national team’s departure from Cancun to Miami was delayed. The airline has apologized for the inconvenience caused,” a FIFA statement explained.

A team spokesperson attributed the delay to FIFA, whereas FIFA blamed an “airline permitting issue.” Nonetheless, FIFA maintained contact with the team, collaborating with airport authorities and partners to expedite the process and minimize disruption.

This story is developing, with further updates anticipated.
