Universal Orlando’s Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure is starting a phased closure after more than 25 years of operation. Demolition work has already commenced in this storied area of the park. Footage shared by local news showed an excavator amid piles of rubble as the transformation begins.
A spokesperson from Universal Orlando shared that the venues and experiences within the Lost Continent will progressively close, paving the way for a new themed area. One notable closure announced is Mythos Restaurant, set for 2027.
The Lost Continent opened in 1999, initially shaping the identity of Islands of Adventure with its mythological themes and grand stone structures. Known for its atmospheric charm, the area featured technology-driven effects and engaging live entertainment.
The area hosted popular attractions like the Dueling Dragons roller coasters, which were legendary for their synchronized paths and intricate design. Initially re-themed as Dragon Challenge in 2010 with the unveiling of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the coasters closed in 2017 to make way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.
“Dueling Dragons was an iconic ride, later transformed into Dragon Challenge in line with the Wizarding World theme changes,”
Pandemonium stole the spotlight with Poseidon’s Fury, catering to thrill-seekers with dramatic water effects and live performances until its closure in 2023. The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad, a live stunt show, took its final bow in 2018.
While attractions are closing, Universal is gearing up for new entertainment options with strategic development plans. The resort will soon unveil Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a roller coaster based on the popular film series, set for debut in 2027.
The renowned Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida has been temporarily closed to transition into a revamped experience, integrating classic and modern horror elements with unexpected features.
Maintenance at popular attractions like the Hogwarts Castle continues, ensuring they remain in top condition for visitors. Universal Orlando’s planned enhancements promise fresh experiences and adventures for future guests.
Reactions from visitors have been mixed as the lost continent’s legacy becomes part of Universal’s evolving history. While some express approval of the updates, many fans express nostalgia and affection for the retiring attractions.
