Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced positive developments in the ongoing conflict with Russia. He stated that Ukraine’s forces are improving their positions and causing significant damage to Russian troops. This shift in fortune comes after concerns that reduced U.S. support might benefit Russia under Vladimir Putin’s leadership.
Zelensky’s optimistic update highlights the changing dynamics in Ukraine’s favor. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has played a crucial role. These have offset the pullback in American aid by executing effective drone strikes both behind front lines and deeper within Russia. Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili noted that the situation is significantly better for Ukraine than last year.
Ukraine Enhances Drone Capability
The Ukrainian defense ministry reported a notable increase in drone production over the past year. This includes reconnaissance drones, mid-strike and deep-strike drones, and fiber-optic first-person view (FPV) drones, which have been effective on the frontlines.
Matthew Arnold, from the London School of Economics’ LSE Ideas, commented on Ukraine’s initiative in rapidly learning and deploying drone technology compared to Russia. Kyiv has intensified mid-range strikes against Russian logistics in occupied areas like southeastern Ukraine, while also ramping up frontline operations.
Ukraine Targets Russian Supply Lines
One of Moscow’s goals was to establish a land corridor linking occupied Crimea to Rostov, Russia. Ukraine has countered this by targeting Russian supply lines daily. Even pro-war Russian military bloggers have expressed concern over this development.
Critical Months Ahead
General Andriy Biletskyi of Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps emphasized the next six months’ importance. He suggested that sustained momentum could force Russia to abandon portions of the Donetsk region it does not control. He mentioned the Russian army’s inability to achieve significant breakthroughs, exacerbated by Elon Musk restricting Starlink access for Russian forces.
Military operations are forcing Russia into costly tactics at locations like Sloviansk. On the battlefield, Ukraine aims to secure strategic points to gain leverage in negotiations, according to Biletskyi.
Changing War Dynamics
Zelensky reported that Ukraine reclaimed nearly 230 square miles this year, compared to Russia’s slowed advances of 40 square miles. The Institute for the Study of War noted the potential for Kyiv’s forces to conduct limited mechanized assaults, marking a new phase in the conflict.
Ukraine launched successful ‘middle strikes’ against Russian defenses and logistics up to 120 miles from the front. Strikes on Russian facilities, including export terminals and refineries, have increased. Notable targets such as Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport and oil facilities were hit, signaling a shift through increased vulnerabilities inside Russia.
Putin’s Determination
Despite setbacks, Putin remains committed to capturing all territories in the Donbas region, commenting on Ukrainian troop demoralization. Unnamed sources suggest Putin might be misled by exaggerated maps from military command, which could impact his strategy decisions.
Challenges persist, particularly around Kostiantynivka, where Russian forces employ infiltration tactics and heavy bombardment to weaken Ukrainian defenses. The fight for Donetsk carries political and military significance, necessitating Russia’s experience of both military and political defeats, according to Revishvili.
