Trump Delays Housing Act, Pushes for SAVE America Act

President Donald Trump postponed the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. He called for the immediate passage of the SAVE America Act instead. Trump announced on Truth Social, “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency.”

The House passed the Housing Act with a vote of 358-32. The legislation addresses housing affordability by increasing home supply and prohibiting large investors from buying single-family homes. Despite this, Trump criticized the act as “Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren centric,” emphasizing that it does not match the importance of passing the SAVE America Act.

The SAVE America Act focuses on voter ID and citizenship verification, which Trump deems essential as elections approach. Speaker Mike Johnson supported Trump’s decision, expressing a shared commitment to the SAVE America Act, which includes proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID requirements at polling stations. Johnson noted that a majority of Americans agree on the need for photo ID to vote.

Trump’s call to action included strong rhetoric against both Democrats and Republicans. He urged swift passage of the SAVE America Act, even suggesting changes to procedural rules like the filibuster. Trump stated that Democrats would act quickly, and Republicans should do the same. His message highlighted the potential embarrassment for Republicans if they delay.

The delayed housing legislation followed prolonged discussions regarding restrictions on private equity investors and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The bill aims to ease regulations for factory-built homes and streamline environmental reviews. It also encourages local zoning changes to increase home construction.

Home affordability remains a concern in the U.S., with the median home price exceeding $400,000 according to Realtor.com.
