Trump Criticizes Italian Prime Minister Meloni Over G7 Summit and Iran War Support

President Donald Trump has criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, claiming she repeatedly asked for a photo with him during the G7 Summit in France. Trump aired these grievances on social media, echoing statements he made to an Italian publication.

Meloni responded, telling Reuters that Trump’s claims were unfounded and expressing surprise at his behavior towards allies. She stated, “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies.”

The friction between Trump and Meloni intensified following the G7 Summit and disagreements over the Iran conflict. Trump accused Meloni of insufficient support in the U.S.-led efforts against Iran. He stated on social media that Meloni’s decision not to allow U.S. forces to use Italian airbases was a logistical obstacle.

According to The Guardian, Italy denied access to a Sicilian airbase for U.S. planes transporting arms intended for the campaign against Iran. Trump expressed discontent with Meloni, noting that the U.S. allocates significant funds to protect Italy and other NATO allies.

Trump ended his comments by accusing Meloni of attempting to improve relations now that the U.S. had militarily defeated Iran, dismissing her attempts to mend ties.

On Instagram, Meloni countered Trump’s criticisms, asserting that her popularity hinges on defending Italy’s interests, not her relationship with the U.S. She explained the governance of military base usage by agreements Italy has upheld.

Meloni reminded that Italy maintains sovereignty and that her popularity is not Trump’s concern, suggesting he should focus on his own popularity.

Initially, Trump and Meloni had a positive relationship, with Meloni being the only EU leader invited to Trump’s 2025 inauguration. Both leaders share conservative views and opposition to modern ideological trends.

Their relationship frayed when Trump initiated global tariffs, impacting Italy despite Meloni’s lobbying for trade relief. A 15% tariff remained on most EU imports.

Trump’s criticisms of Pope Leo’s Iran policies also drew Meloni’s rebuke. She described Trump’s remarks as unacceptable, reflecting broader diplomatic tensions.

Italy’s non-participation in the Iran conflict was firm. Meloni assured the Italian Senate of Italy’s neutrality and lack of intent to join the conflict.

Despite differences, Meloni has consistently opposed Iran’s nuclear weapon ambitions, advocating for diplomatic measures. She reiterated Iran should not develop nuclear capabilities at last year’s G7 Summit.

U.S.-Iran discussions aimed at easing tensions were postponed due to renewed Middle Eastern conflicts. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah allowed talks to resume in Switzerland.

Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding, outlining the cessation of military actions across various fronts, including Lebanon.
