Tragic BASE Jumping Accident in Utah Canyon

Andrew Lewis, a 39-year-old extreme athlete, tragically died over the weekend during a BASE jumping attempt in a remote canyon in southeastern Utah. Known for his high-profile performance during Madonna’s halftime show at the 2012 Super Bowl, Lewis was a respected figure in the world of extreme sports, particularly tightrope walking.

The incident occurred in Mineral Bottom, Grand County, Utah, a secluded desert area. Local authorities reported that Lewis and another jumper, Danny Joe Kregle, were pronounced dead at the scene. Kregle was in his 50s. Lewis ran BASE Jump Moab, an adventure sports business that offered BASE jumping excursions in Utah.

During the ill-fated jump, Lewis was attached to Kregle, indicating a tandem BASE jump attempt. Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins stated that Kregle died immediately on impact. Lewis survived the impact but succumbed despite medical efforts to save him over three grueling hours.

The cause of death for both Lewis and Kregle is still under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed the nature of their relationship. The area is known for BASE jumping activities but poses significant challenges due to its remote location, lack of cell phone reception, and difficult accessibility from Moab.
