As the Fourth of July draws near, President Trump’s group, Freedom 250, has overshadowed the original bipartisan commission. This organization is at the forefront of planning ambitious events, which include a triumphal arch and a National Garden of American Heroes. The Great American State Fair is also part of Freedom 250’s initiatives, held on the National Mall. Recently, they sponsored an Ultimate Fighting Championship match on the White House lawn under their banner.
The emergence of these two competing groups highlights governmental issues and intense partisanship. Such division stands in stark contrast to what should be a unifying national event. Behind the scenes, a struggle for control has played out, driven by President Trump’s desire to impose his personal vision on the festivities, sidelining congressional plans.
Democrats have expressed discontent with this development, viewing Freedom 250 as a partisan project rather than a genuine celebration. Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, a Democrat from New Jersey who has been involved with the America 250 commission since 2019, criticizes Freedom 250 as a personal vanity project of the president.
