Progressive lawmakers have sparked heated debates with claims of ‘modern-day lynchings’ in America. Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and 50 Democrats have urged a federal investigation into hangings, while officials say most of the ten cases are suicides. Only one case in Mississippi is currently seen as a homicide.
Amidst rising tensions, Ohio Congresswoman Shontel Brown received backlash for stating an increase of Black Americans found hanging from trees. Despite these claims being debunked, Brown and Pressley demanded an inquiry into these deaths to ensure a transparent process.
Social media platforms reacted strongly. Actor Dean Cain criticized these statements as misleading and harmful. Podcaster Don Keith accused Brown of exacerbating racial divides and shifting blame inappropriately.
Questionable Cases and Investigations
The investigation of a 21-year-old man’s death in Cobb County, Georgia found no evidence of foul play. Other cases in North Carolina and Florida were determined to be suicides. The case of Tasia Fortune is being treated as a homicide, with the suspect Jarques Ratliff already arrested.
Despite these clarifications, accusations of race baiting continue. Critics, including author Dan Friedman, highlighted the improbability of the claims and labeled them as deceitful.
Law enforcement agencies confirmed that some of the deceased had been witnessed taking their own lives, dismissing notions of racially motivated killings.
Brown has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the backlash. The controversy stirs ongoing discussions about race, historical context, and media influence in America.
