A.I. Artificial Intelligence, released in 2001 by Steven Spielberg, explores the emotional journey of a robotic boy programmed to love and his quest to become human. Among its creations is Teddy, an animatronic teddy bear that provides intelligent companionship to humans. Despite its science fiction roots, the concept of AI companions in children’s lives is gradually becoming a reality.

Today, various tech startups are creating toys and robots equipped with AI, similar to Teddy in Spielberg’s movie. These AI companions offer numerous functionalities for children, such as answering questions, helping with homework, and providing interaction. However, this raises questions about AI’s role in children’s development.

Author Dana Suskind, in her book Human Raised: Nurturing Connection, Curiosity & Lifelong Learning in the Age of AI, examines the implications of integrating AI into child-rearing. Suskind sees potential benefits in AI as a tool that can offer productivity enhancements for parents and educational support for kids. Yet, she warns against allowing AI to replace essential human interactions in early childhood.

Suskind’s concern is that AI companions might seem attractive but could pose hidden risks to child development, potentially replacing the human interactions needed for kids’ cognitive development.

Research by developmental psychologist Patricia K. Kuhl highlights the importance of social interaction in brain development. Children learn more effectively through human engagement rather than passive media consumption. This dynamic engagement helps in language acquisition, emotional development, and problem-solving skills.

While AI systems can’t fully substitute human interactions, they have the potential to enhance educational tools. Suskind cautions that these technologies should support, not replace, human educators and caregivers.

AI systems are designed with commercial goals, such as capturing attention and collecting data. These priorities differ from parental goals, raising concerns over AI’s impact on child development. Human interactions are complex and filled with emotions, teaching resilience and relationship skills, which AI cannot replicate.

Suskind compares AI’s potential effects on children to ultra-processed foods. Over-reliance on AI may result in less appreciation for genuine human relationships. Just like the historic infant formula controversy shows the risks of engineering human substitutes, AI companionship could disrupt traditional caregiving.

Given AI’s uncertain effects on young minds, Suskind advises cautious use, especially during formative years when children build foundational skills. She stresses that human caregivers are crucial in developing critical thinking, creativity, empathy, and resilience.

There is a risk of AI-driven child-rearing becoming widespread due to escalating childcare costs. Suskind warns this could lead to disparities where affluent families afford human interaction while others rely on AI. This could hinder children’s development of interpersonal skills crucial for future employment in sectors demanding human qualities.
