The Guardian of Ukrainian Soldiers

In times of war, it is not uncommon for nations to impose certain restrictions and require young individuals to enlist in the armed forces. This situation is evident in Ukraine. However, conscripts in a democracy still have rights and protections.

My colleague, Maria Varenikova, reports on Olha Reshetylova, appointed by the Ukrainian government to safeguard soldiers. Her role focuses not on defense against Russia but on protection from commanders who may mistreat them.

Reshetylova, aged 40, has two sons, aged 5 and 14, who could potentially join the fight if the ongoing war, which has lasted over four years, continues longer. Her husband is already serving in the military. For her, the mission is deeply personal.

As highlighted by Maria Varenikova, Reshetylova’s work is significant in calling out the Ukrainian military to ensure fair treatment for its soldiers.
