Sixteen teenagers are facing trespassing charges following their arrest at the shuttered Congress Theater located in the Logan Square neighborhood, Chicago police announced. The arrests took place on Friday, nearly a week after authorities shut down an unsanctioned rave at the venue.
Police reported that the arrests occurred at around 8:15 p.m. after officers responded to a call regarding criminal trespass. Two of the arrested teenagers also faced citations for carrying replica firearms.
Though several teenagers attempted to flee the scene, officers successfully detained them. Last week, an unsanctioned rave took place at the abandoned theater, organized by DJ Kula, a local underground DJ known for hosting similar events throughout Chicago. DJ Kula has previously organized raves at various locations such as the Jackson Red Line station, the vacant Portage Theater, and the demolished Damen Silos.
According to a report from Block Club Chicago, the rave at Logan Square drew hundreds of attendees. The historic Congress Theater has gained popularity among ‘urban explorers.’ Social media platforms often feature posts showcasing individuals exploring the dark, dilapidated interior of the building.
