Suzy Kolber Discusses ESPN Layoff and Transition

Suzy Kolber was among the 20 talents laid off by ESPN in June 2023. This decision included other notable figures like Steve Young, Max Kellerman, and Jalen Rose. At the time, Kolber was the host of ‘Monday Night Countdown.’

Recently, Kolber addressed her firing on the ‘Sports Media with Richard Deitsch’ podcast. She recounted a conversation with ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro. ‘He said, ‘Suzy, there’s a whiteboard and your name’s on it. I don’t really know for sure right now but your name is on it,” Kolber recalled.

Kolber was uncertain about her job security and shared her feelings with her daughter. ‘I sat down next to her and I cried,’ she said, reflecting on that moment.

The week following, Kolber was contacted by ESPN executive Norby Williamson. He cautioned her against making negative remarks about ESPN, warning that such comments could affect the final year of her contract. Despite taking a pay cut earlier, Kolber believed this would secure her role until her career’s end.

While some might view her emotional response as entitled, non-disparagement clauses are typical for talent under contract. The challenges of layoffs are not unique to her situation.

Kolber’s tenure at ESPN spans 27 years. She expressed disappointment about not receiving recognition for her contributions. ‘I was the first person hired for the launch of ESPN 2. I was the first person assigned to the X Games,’ she noted. However, she felt unappreciated upon her departure.

Her departure seemed linked to financial pressures, requiring ESPN to reduce talent costs. Scott Van Pelt replaced her on ‘Countdown,’ with his role including hosting the Super Bowl coverage, reflecting ESPN’s strategy for high-profile broadcasts.

Despite the circumstances, Kolber holds an accomplished reputation as a host. Although ESPN chose not to rehire her, she has transitioned to new opportunities. Kolber has launched an interview series, ‘The Originals,’ airing on the Scripps Sports Network. Her debut episode premiered on September 15.
