Storm Edouard Weakens After Landfall

Edouard Weakens into Depression

Edouard, once a Tropical Storm, weakened into a depression on Tuesday night. It caused heavy rain and strong winds in Texas, disrupting power for thousands and damaging property. The National Hurricane Center stated that the storm reduced in intensity after making landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph).

Although losing strength, Edouard is expected to continue delivering heavy rains and possible flooding through Wednesday, impacting inland areas. In the Pacific, tropical weather remains active with three named storms in motion.

Impact on Texas and Louisiana

Edouard crossed over Beaumont, Texas, about 80 miles northeast of Houston. City offices closed and the Texas Office of Emergency Management advised residents to avoid roads. Issues like blocked roads due to fallen trees, malfunctioning traffic signals, and flooded underpasses were reported by Beaumont Police.

Poweroutage.com indicated about 32,000 customers in Jefferson County, which includes Beaumont, lost electricity. Mike Gilbert closed his surf shop on Texas’ Crystal Beach preemptively. Despite concerns, the area experienced mild rain as Edouard landed roughly 60 miles northeast.

In Cameron, Louisiana, Connor Salvador, RV park owner, noted increased winds and intermittent rain. He voiced minimal concern over potential flooding, citing regional storm experience.

Pacific Ocean Storm Activity

Hurricane Lowell recently formed in the Pacific Ocean, expected to stay several hundred miles from Hawaii. Yet, swells from this hurricane could pose dangers to beaches and marine activities. The National Hurricane Center predicts its influence on Hawaiian conditions to start on Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Marie, forming well offshore southwest Mexico, is projected to reach hurricane status by Wednesday night. It is anticipated to produce coastal swells affecting southwest Mexico and the Baja California peninsula soon.

In addition, Hurricane Karina evolved into a Category 4 storm but is forecasted to weaken, maintaining a distance from any landmass.
