Authorities reported a stabbing in the heart of downtown Nantucket on Tuesday morning, near the ferry docks that bring thousands of summer visitors to this affluent Massachusetts island.
Nantucket police responded at 10:23 a.m. to a report of a stabbing on South Beach Street, situated between Broad Street and Oak Street. This area is a busy commercial zone, close to the Steamship Authority ferry terminal, where tourists often gather in the island’s cobblestone downtown.
The injured individual received immediate treatment at the scene and the Nantucket Fire Department rushed them to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, according to police. This incident happened in one of the most trafficked areas of Nantucket.
Witnesses told the Nantucket Current that the stabbing followed a verbal and physical dispute between the drivers of a Myles Reis garbage truck and a Sayles Seafood delivery truck parked in the vicinity. After sustaining injuries, the victim ran towards ‘The Strip’, where employees from Stubby’s and nearby businesses attempted to control the bleeding with napkins until first responders arrived.
Authorities detained a second person at the scene. As of Tuesday evening, officials had yet to disclose the suspect’s identity, but an arraignment was set for Wednesday morning in Nantucket District Court. Police stated that the investigation was ongoing, and additional details were withheld.
The stabbing occurred as Nantucket prepared for a peak summer season, transforming the usually tranquil island with an influx of vacationers, day-trippers, seasonal workers, and affluent homeowners.
The Massachusetts State Police declined to add further information, redirecting inquiries to the Nantucket Police Department.
