South Korea Coach Steps Down After World Cup Exit

South Korea’s national football coach, Hong Myung-bo, resigned following the team’s early departure from the World Cup. Their exit drew sharp criticism from President Lee Jae Myung, who labeled the coach as ‘incapable.’ A comprehensive review of the national team program was ordered.

South Korea began the tournament with a win against the Czech Republic but faltered in subsequent matches against South Africa and Mexico. They aimed to qualify for further rounds as a third-place team, but hopes were dashed after Congo’s victory over Uzbekistan on Saturday.

President Lee Jae Myung expressed his displeasure at the unexpected outcome during a public statement. He had been actively involved in sports and expressed deep dismay. He criticized the structure, oversight, and the very appointment of Hong Myung-bo as head coach.

‘Personnel decisions are crucial. Prioritizing loyalty over competence leads to failure,’ Lee stated.

The coach, Hong, aged 57, issued an apology to fans upon his resignation while departing from the team’s base in Mexico. This marked his second role as the national team coach, with his previous tenure in 2014 also ending in a group stage exit.

Hong addressed Korean fans, acknowledging his responsibility for not meeting expectations.

‘As coach, I bear responsibility for the results. I apologize to those who supported us,’ Hong said.

Despite stepping down, Hong expressed continued support for Korean football, hoping the team would restore public trust.

South Korea has participated in every World Cup since 1986, achieving semifinal status when hosting the event in 2002. President Lee urged a detailed review of the national team failures, seeking reforms in sports administration to prevent similar issues.

‘I apologize for the disappointment. We will swiftly enact reforms to improve sports governance,’ Lee affirmed.
