South Braces for More Floods Following Rainy Memorial Day

Following a wet Memorial Day weekend, the southern United States is not yet in the clear. Approximately 15 million people face flood alerts from Louisiana to Georgia on Tuesday as the region braces for additional heavy rain and thunderstorms. Some areas may see up to 2 inches of rainfall.

Reports include a flooded driveway in Poplarville, Mississippi. Excessive rain is expected to impact an area extending from the Carolinas to western Texas. Parts of southwest Texas, including Midland and Fort Stockton, could experience large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.

Over Memorial Day weekend, imagery showed cars stranded in multiple inches of rain throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Flood alerts are in effect:

  • New Orleans: Under flood watch until 7 p.m. local time Tuesday. Rain and storms will persist through the evening, with expectations of up to an inch, and localized areas may receive 2 inches. Strong thunderstorms have recently impacted the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
  • Atlanta: Flood watch until 11 p.m. local time Tuesday. Rainfall is predicted between 0.75 inches to 1.25 inches, with up to 2 inches possible in some areas. The city could face hourly rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches, risking flash floods even where flood watches are not in place.

Additional precipitation is predicted throughout the week, though specific amounts have yet to be determined.
